The average person can reach people with their opinions they’re not just writing a letter that gets buried in volumes of mail. In the age of social media, things are so different. People can watch the movie on demand this week, but what else can they do if they want to get involved? There were women directors, stars, and studio heads… ![]() A lot of people don’t know the history of Hollywood, that women were such an integral part of the entertainment industry at its beginning. To hear their stories about how shut down they were was absolutely devastating. The part I knew the least about was the history of the female directors in the film and what they went through. There are a lot of powerful moments in the film, but what do you think is the most important? Why on earth would we be teaching kids from that age to have unconscious gender bias when we’re all trying so hard to overcome that later? I didn’t intend for all of this to happen, but when my daughter was young and I first showed her kids TV shows, I immediately noticed that there were far more male characters than female characters in what was being made for kids in the 21 st century. And I have to be careful what I get involved in, because I always take it to the further possible degree. What made you decide to approach this issue from a research-based standpoint? I wouldn’t have ever made a movie like this I wouldn’t have thought of being able to. ![]() It was fabulous, then, that Tom came to us with a project that was already going and that covered all the bases it does. What viewers are presented with, in terms of how many women we see on screen or how directors have dealt with discrimination, really knocks you over the head.Īs we want it to! We had thought, here and there, about making a short film or a documentary about our specific aspect of the problem, but nothing ever got beyond a very casual discussion about whether that was possible. The work I’ve been doing for the past 15 years with my research institute is why he thought of me, and why it felt like such a perfect fit to me. What about your work do you think made you a fit for this project? I came in about two years after he started, when he heard about my institute and the research we were doing, and he wanted me to be interviewed for the film but to be part of it and help him shape the rest of what he wanted to accomplish. Tom Donahue, the director, came up with the idea, raised and the money, and was totally responsible for making the film. Was making a movie about the topics you’re studying always the plan?
